Product Description

Teach Yourself C++ in 24 Hours follows the step-by-step approach of the Teach Yourself series to show readers C++ basics in a quick, easy-to-learn method. Since it doesn't focus on any one compiler, readers learn to program in C++ using the compiler of their choice.

From the Author
About 24 Hours
Thank you for considering my book. In Teach Yourself C++ In 24 Hours I tried to provide a comprehensive introduction to C++ for the novice programmer. Can you really learn C++ in 24 hours? If each chapter takes an hour, and you supplement the chapter by writing little programs to test your knowledge, then I'm convinced you can become a C++ programmer in these 24 hours. I've tested this material with literally thousands of students nation wide. I offer a four day on site training course which provides about 24 hours of instruction, and in that time we cover the entire gamut of material. This book equips you to learn this material on your own, at your own pace. You can find related information at my web site: www.libertyassociates.com. and you can write to me at jliberty@libertyassociates.com. Thank you again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fatally out of date, 11 Mar 2004
By A Customer
While this book explains the principles of programming in C++, and you will quickly grasp the concepts of pointers, references etc (though the chapter on linked lists could be clearer) it gives little idea how to apply these concepts to real-life programming. Worse, it practically ignores the Standard Template Library which underlies most modern approaches to programming in C++. So, for example, working with strings is made so much harder, and the book barely reconises the existence of vectors, lists etc. If you want to be able to get stuck into programming, ignore this book and buy 'Accelerated C++' instead - a far better book for the beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book to learn C++ if you already know C, 24 May 2000
By A Customer
I bought this book since I wanted a generic introduction to C++ I had no particular reason for picking this book over any other. For what I bought it for, it is a good tutorial and fairly easy to refer too later on after you've worked your way through it. I was a competent C programmer when I picked this book up and it did a good job of teaching me the extra knowledge I needed to become a C++ programmer. However if you're a beginner then forget it, you will never learn C++ from this book, Learn C first and then come back to it. (Despite the claims of various authors I don't think that you can learn C++ without knowing C anyway, I would personally recommend the Dan Gookin books) If you're experienced in some other object-orientated language like Delphi/Pascal then maybe this is the book for you but I don't think VB programmers would get anything out of it. However if you can program in C and want a C++ book as opposed to a Builder book or a Visual C++ book then this one is pretty good and worth considering.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, if you know how to program..., 10 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This is a pretty good book, a comprehensive crash course i c++, it covers just about everything one need to get started with c++, but I think you'd better know object oriented programming before you start because it's really brief on some of the more complex issues.

There's one bad thing with the book though, it is very clearly an adaption of the 21 days book. Sometimes they have forgotten to change references from days to hours and those sorts of stuff. Nothing major, but a bit annoying, and it gives the book a low budget feel.
