1.0 out of 5 stars "Do this", why?, "Look, just do it okay!" (then repeat)., 28 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Lke most of the other reviewers, I found the endless repeating of simple actions tedious. There is, I'm afraid, very little substance in here, a string of childishly simple instructions, no explanation as to why you are doing anything, and an enormous self congratulatory pat on the back when a single line of code compiles. This kind of book should not make it to the stands.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fair introduction to the Visual C++ interface and MFC, 3 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I'm a beginning programmer with some knowledge of C, but no C++. I wanted to learn to use the Visual C++ software as more than an ordinary C compiler, and to write Windows programs. I found this book went some way towards addressing my needs, but not far enough. So much of the book is repetition of what has gone before. Once you have created a new project with AppWizard a couple of times, you don't need a whole page to tell you how to do it every time after that.

Don't expect to write anything really useful while working through this book. The 21-day format means that all the example projects are trivial (a real one would take too long). And the only functions you learn are the simple ones that you come across while learning to do something else. The emphasis is heavily on using the interface, not learning the language. There are three appendices at the back, but they are not enough to give you more than a basic understanding of how C and C++ work. You will be able to follow the code in the examples after reading them, but not be able to write much original code. For that you need a more comprehensive guide - there is no way round it. (Schildt's Teach Yourself books are good in this regard, for the intelligent reader without much of a programming background who wants to learn to think for themselves and understand exactly what they are doing.)

It's okay at what it does, I suppose (even though it's too padded out and the 21-day format is silly). And even though it says it's for VC++5, most of it still applies to version 6 too so don't worry if you can't find a more up-to-date book. But if you want nitty-gritty detail about how you can use Visual C++ to write what YOU want and not just what Messrs Gurewich want, forget the book and spend some time delving deep into the MSDN Library CDs that came with your software. There's a tutorial called Scribble in there (under Visual C++ Tutorials) which takes you through building an application which uses most of the techniques in this book and which actually does something worthwhile at the end. Work through that and look through the MFC Library in Visual C++ Reference, then buy this book if you still don't understand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Repeating the same text to fill up more pages, 3 Dec 1999
By A Customer
I couldn't take it for more than 3 chapters(days). I found that I skipped a lot of the text, since I had already read it. And sometimes, because of that, I missed the text that I hadn't read.

This book keeps repeating the same things. If I suddenly would forget how to open a wizard I can always go back to the first time that it was explained (in a normal book), there is no need (except filling up pages) to keep repeating the simpliest stuff OVER, AND OVER, AND OVER AGAIN.

I couldn't go on reading this book, so to me it was unreadable. And I can't give that a higher grade than the lowest possible.
