5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Weber yet, 5 Dec 1998
By A Customer
The Great Alliance of 'Crusade' fame is at war again and this time the perspectives of humans and their allies looks bleak. But Weber's heroes know too well that they have nothing to lose: this war wouldn't be finished with a treaty - this is fight for survival. "In difficult ground, press on; In encircled ground, devise stratagems; In death ground, fight."

This book is the best of what I had read from Weber. It combines high quality description of high-tech interstellar warfare with much larger scope than in his previous Honor series. Excellent description of deep space battles, constant tension maintaining from first to the last page and truly 'strategic' outlook combines to create an excellent reading. Can't wait for sequel. Must have for every fun of interstellar warfare.

I'm a little surprised, though, by some of previous reviewers complains about 'lack of character development'. I believe there is some misunderstanding here. Hard-core military SF (or space opera, if you want) is not supposed to emulate 'War and Peace', but it doesn't neccessary mean that it's worse! They are just different kind of literature and can't be directly compared. Extensive 'characterization' in "In death ground" would be as out of place as lifestory of _insert-name-here_ lieutenant from Omaha beach in 'The Second World War' or love story in 'The Victory at Sea'. In my opinion, additional 'human interaction' element to this novel could be entertaining, perhaps, but actually would add nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last the sequel arrives, well soon..., 22 Dec 1999

Not a review in itself, but... David Weber & Steve White have started to work on the sequel currently titled The Shiva Option. Unfortunately there is no projected publication date for it at this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner!, 9 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This is the 3rd book in the series (Insurrection & Crusade being the first two) and is a superb read. David & Steve have brought the battle between the Grand Alliance & the Arachnids to life. Humanity has almost been beaten and it is only with the help of their non human allies that they manage to survive.

Two years ago I had never heard of David Weber, but now I have read almost everything he has written.

The only bad thing I can think of is that the book ends prematurely. A sequal must be forthcoming soon otherwise this is cruelty in the extreme.
