Alice Evans is 38 and single. She's fallen for her pottery teacher, James Mitchel, but has a horrible feeling that she'll have to settle for Eamon. Then, in the nick of time, events and people conspire to make her believe this course of action may not be entirely necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wise Writing, 12 Jun 2007
By S. Power (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Wise Follies (Paperback)
There's no folly in this wonderful, thought provoking and beautifully written book. It centres around Alice Evans, who is employed on a women's magazine to write sex and relationship articles, but she has not yet found the answer to the question 'Why Am I Alone?'
Her house-mate Mira, has already given up hope and is engaged in evening classes and pursuits, from motor cycle maintenance to joining a South Seas Appreciation Society, in order to become a fully qualified eccentric spinster. But the wisdom of Alice, who is the central character of Wise Follies, is the wisdom of determined naivety in a world that demands cynicism. All her life she spoke of and waited for Mr. Wonderful...but she has grown afraid of life and the dreams that have possibly led her astray.
We cannot fail to like Alice and the motley crew of friends, neighbours and pets she has gathered around her, from the resolutely short-sighted Mrs Peabody to the budgie whose favourite word is 'bollocks'. 'Wise Follies' is a smooth, refreshing read. You are left with the undoubted impression that Alice's vulnerability is straight from the heart of the writer. Because it is revealed so honestly we recognise it in ourselves. Bring tissues and a paper bag to laugh into when you read this book outside the privacy of your own home!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wise Follies, Author: Grace Wynne-Jones, 7 Jun 2007
This review is from: Wise Follies (Paperback)
In Wise Follies, Alice draws us into her life in such a conspiratorial fashion that I felt both intrigued and enchanted to find myself her 'confidante'. From the very first page Alice surprised laughs out of me, and I just love to be unexpectedly ambushed by a good belly laugh! In her quest to find 'Mr.Wonderful' we follow her wise attempts to avoid self delusion whilst landing herself bang in the middle of a mighty 'crush' on 'Mr.Gorgeous'. Mr.Boring chooses this moment to 'pop the question' offering security and escape from loneliness. In the meantime Alice is busy compounding her own folly by repressing attempts from her dishy young neighbour to attract her attention. What to do?
I felt warmed as Alice's endearing, honest and at times outrageously funny appraisal of her own wisdom, amidst follies of her own making, draw her inevitably to her own self discovery.
Wise Follies is a heart-warmingly funny and sometimes poignant celebration of life ... and a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that puts the fun back into life., 2 May 2000
Another wonderful book by a witty and entertaining writer. Once again a book by Grace Wynne-Jones has made me laugh aloud. There is a strong plot, great humour and a lighthearted air about this novel. If you want to be taken out of yourself and enjoy the fun of a good, well written read, there are serious parts hidden in there too, then rush out and buy Wise Follies.
