Product Description

Synopsis
Whilst a reckless college student, Richard La Plante was arrested and charged with a series of motorcycle offences. It should have been the end of his biking career, but 20 years later, he caught sight of a gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycle in a King's Road showroom and his obsession was rekindled. He caught the HOG fever, and as it raged, it pitched him into a subculture of black leather, tatoos, chrome, Hell's Angels, Rich Urban Bikers, wet T-shirt competitions and the timeless code of the road.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading this book is like looking in the mirror..., 23 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I'm just about to embark on my third reading of Richard's book. Why? Well, it's simple really - while reading Richard's story in Hog Fever I'm reading MY story at the same time, and that of many other Harley owners. Like I say, this book is akin to looking in the mirror!

Harley Davidson is one of those universally recognised brand names, but very few people see what exists behind the famous "Bar and Shield" logo. This book goes a long way in helping the "uninitiated" understand the very unique bond that a Harley Davidson owner creates with his (or her) motorcycle. And for any Harley owner who reads the book, it's almost a relief to know that someone else is going/has gone through exactly the same process!

But please don't run away with the idea that this is a book for bikers, about bikers. Richard succeeds in making this "disease" very funny indeed, from the early stages of nervous anticipation (fear?) before his first ride, through the inevitable stage of getting some serious "ink" (tattoos). Every phase of this man's metamorphosis - from an upright, mature, professional member of the literary community, to a chrome junkie, hell bent on doubling the world debt through constant "investment" in his machine - is laid out in hilarious detail. And ultimately Richard succeeds to a great extent in demystifying the negative image that bikers have with the general public.

Read this book and prepare for some serious exercise of your laughter muscles. Believe me, this book is as infectious as owning a Harley!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have to ask, you don't understand., 27 Oct 1998
By A Customer
I own a HOG myself (FLSTS), and I went through a similar process of love and comittment. By describing his development as a "heavy bro" Richard is able to transmit the ups and downs of a biker's life and his HOG.

Live to ride and ride to live in an European version.

If you know a HOG or you ride a rice cooker, read this book and may be you don't have to ask no more.
