5.0 out of 5 stars Another top class Ferrigno, 13 Jul 2006
By G. Fergus "jollyjambo" (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Cheshire Moon (Paperback)
Quinn is a Pulitzer prize nominated Hollywood investigative journalist who once got a man who was being framed by the police off a murder charge. Unfortunately the man was actually guilty and struck again this time making sure that Quinn knew all about it. After giving up his job, getting divorced and disappearing for a while, Quinn is offered a job on SLAP magazine by its publisher Antonin Napitano, a former Italian tabloid newspaper owner. SLAP Magazine is fantastically described as being,'a snide trendy monthly known for its insider political profiles and gritty photojournalism, celebrity exposes and holographic liquor ads. The schizoid offspring resulting from the rape of Vanity Fair by the National Enquirer, attack journalism with a manicure'.

Initially planning to involve himself only in covering the various colourful characters that Los Angeles attracts, such as the quite frankly amazing Samsons Musclemen for Jesus or the male Madonna impersonators. The sudden and brutal death of a friend drags him and his photographer (and eventual girlfriend) Jen Takmura into investigating the crime.

The police consider the friends death and the death of a local TV producer as a murder/suicide but Quinn has his doubts. He still resists becoming involved but is gradually drawn deeper and deeper into investigating the crime.

Full of wonderfully drawn characters who are never entirely what they seem, this is a great story that is difficult to put down. Yet another top class Ferrigno book.

Quinn and Takamura also appear in the equally excellent Ferrigno book Dead Man's Dance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Over the Proverbial, 20 Sep 2006
By Sam "samueltyler" (Reading, Berkshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Cheshire Moon (Hardcover)
Robert Ferrigno is not the most prolific of authors but this seems to add a lot of quality to his work. It's taken me a while to track down a copy of this, his second novel, and I am very glad that I made the effort.

Quinn is an investigative reporter for the salacious Hollywood magazine Slap! He has just come back from a year away and soon finds himself in another messy and violent encounter. His seedy friend is begging for his help and it's all linked to a top TV star, a dead exec and what looks like an old photo. Can Quinn discover what is happening whilst avoiding death and still writing an article?

Ferrigno has a wonderful way of describing the characters in his book and 'Cheshire Moon' is no different. His particular speciality is the introduction of gruesome bad guys that are as deadly as they are strange looking. By creating a set of characters we care about Ferrigno once again takes us on a thrilling rollercoaster ride.

My one criticism of the book is that it lacks the punch of others he has written such as 'Heart Breaker' and 'The Wake Up'. I would still rate this as an excellent title within the genre of violent crime novels but still not Ferrigno's absolute best.

Please speed up your writing Mr Ferrigno - I want more!
