2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best speed reading book available, 27 Jun 2000
I bought this book for the exercises, which turn out to merely involve trying to see as many letters as possible, spread out over a line, or multiple lines. Well, you could do that with any book if you wanted to, although W.H. Bates, in "Better Vision Without Glasses" says that this sort of thing is bad for the eyes. There's not much to the book apart from that, except for some advice on previewing; the rest is just test material. There is considerably more advice to be found in Tony Buzan's speed reading book. Furthermore, there is no mention of varying your speed for different material, and the claim is made that the words themselves don't matter; it's the ideas behind them that are important. For some types of reading this may be true, but try "getting the idea" of a James Joyce novel and see how well you understand it.

2.0 out of 5 stars This method strains your Eyes too much, 23 May 2000
By A Customer
I was not convinced of this method as it relied on eye exercises too strenuous to do. And it was not realistic in its approach as all books come in different sizes. SO what you see horizontally increase or decreases in your vision. I have not progressed on to the other levels because of this method.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just mechanical pratice without detailed instructions, 3 Jul 1999
By A Customer
It may be especially useful to fix the eyes to the center of column while you read a book in a bus or train rather than hand-moving style speed reading. However, this book doesn't guide detailed instructions for better understanding. Just checking stopwatch while reading lots of practice portion repeatedly, and most of them are novels. Speed reading for fiction? That's stupid!
