In SEVEN STARS, Kim Newman weaves together the threads, motifs and characters from many of his earlier works into a collection of tales of high adventure and strange exploits set in the past, from the roaring 20’s to the flaring 70’s, the present and into the future. Discover places where horror videos start to influence real-life crimes, where Aleister Crowley meets Arthur Conan-Doyle and where the spirit of the Second World War never ends threatening to poison the world.

In "Seven Stars", the final multi-episode novella, Kim Newman takes us from the sands of Ancient Egypt, through fog-bound Victorian London, sun-struck wartime Los Angeles, the paisley-patterned 70’s, to a cyber-space 21st Century as a succession of fearless investigators confront a mystery handed down from generation to generation, each hero battling evil in their own inimitable style.

This dazzling collection of stories shows Kim Newman at his very best blending satire, terror, pulp fiction and romance in his own unique style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning micro-mythology, 22 Mar 2001
By A Customer
An impressive feat of world-building. Though essentially a series of short stories set between Ancient Egypt and the near future, each tale centres around the whereabouts of the Seven Stars, and ancient artefact. Introducing a dazzling array of characters as he goes, Newman builds the intrigue in each story through a variety of hints and clues, until the novella which provides the collection's finale, drawing several of the protagonists together.

Beyond the vivid detail with which Newman paints his literary landscapes (wherein he pulls his most famous trick of mixing his own fictional characters with actual historical figures, as well as fictional creations from the authors of yesteryear), there is a joyful edge to the storytelling - each of his main characters would be worth, you sense, a TV series in their own right, a medium to which they would be particularly suited. This book isn't nearly satisfying enough, but only because it leaves you with an appetite for so much more...

5.0 out of 5 stars Seven Stars, all of them shining bright., 31 Oct 2002
By M. S. Richards "twitchwilliams" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The world of Kim Newman is at once familiar and strange. Familiar, because of the numerous cameos from characters both real and fictional. Strange, due to the tales they become entangled in. Within these pages we meet Conan Doyle, Peter Lorre and many others, along with a gamut of Newman's own narrative-hopping creations. It's nice to get reacquainted with the Undead Genevieve Dieudonne and single-mother-Private investigator Sally Rhodes. If you're a fan of Newman's brand of post-modern fiction, then you'll find this volume hugely rewarding. Especially the first story, 'Angel Down, Sussex' which features the Edwardian predecessors to Mulder and Scully as they race against Aleister Crowley to make contact with some familiar looking little grey fellows. Also included are the final two tales in the 'Where The Bodies Are Buried' sequence, as well as a sequel to 'The Big Fish' - which alone would be worth the price of the book. This is great stuff and great fun.
