Beautifully written in a flowing style, you are caught almost from the start by the central character Grace, who escapes from a marriage to her self-obsessed and extremely selfish and repressed husband Walter an imminent scientist, while on a trip with him to China shortly before the Tienamen square riots. The desciptions of China seem realistic although I cannot judge this personally. It is the story of her development in confidence and academic expertise - one sees her blossom personally once free of Walter's baleful and restrictive influence. Both characters and that of her chinese friend are entirely believable. An excellent read
