5.0 out of 5 stars Helped me understand the death of my mother, 2 Jul 1998
By A Customer
A book that gave me great understanding to life, loss and those events we fear in life. I read this book over five years ago and look to it to provide support to a friend who recently lost a wife. It is an easy read but allows for great reflection about ones life as you read it. I recommend it to all that are ready for greater wisdom about life's pains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, profound, perplexing and illuminating, 22 May 2002
By Self-help junkie (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
This is a really excellent book for anyone who wants to know more about a psychoanalytic understanding of how people come to be the way they are. Central to Voist's marvellous synthesis of psychoanalytic theory is the argument that it is the way we are able to face and deal with the inevitable losses in life that determines our 'health'. And central to this ability is the stability and health of our earliest relationships with mother and father. This is not always an easy read - I suspect that for those who come to it without any previous knowledge of psychoanalytic theory it will be rather 'dense' - but I think it is a remarkable summary of some very complex and unapproachable models of human development. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 11 Jul 2004
By A Customer
This long-winded book describes the problem rather than the solution. The writer is like a well-meaning but whiney friend reflecting on the ups and downs of all our lives and only occasionally getting to an insight. But if you just want to feel that someone else out there understands what you're going through, then this could be a helpful book.
