4.0 out of 5 stars A good tense suspense story , 5 Feb 2009
By R. Nicholson-morton "Nik Morton" (Alicante, Spain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From the outset, Goodis thrusts you into Calvin Jander's predicament. He's swimming for his life off the coast of New Jersey. Bad weather, bad luck. But help seems near at hand - until the men in the passing boat abandon him. He has time to reflect on his past and it's a pretty miserable existence. Sure, there are the highs but they don't compensate for the lows. Take for example his brief chat with Vera, a woman who attracts men like a light draws moths. She told him to stay away from her. But he couldn't - and fate made sure they'd meet again.

A tightly written short novel with a sympathetic tough guy who doesn't seem to get any decent breaks. Goodis has created a small but intriguing collection of characters - a couple of believable villains who have escaped from prison, a drunken spouse, put-upon Jander and the delectable Vera who happens to be very good with a knife...

This is a good tense suspense story that keeps you turning the pages, though I was dissatisfied with the (probably fitting) end.
