4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Years ago the best, now. . ., 23 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Not a triathlon book for beginners, but it still has some very useful information (and I must add some very original workouts). This was the book that I used to get started, and at the time I must admit it confused me. But now that I have more experience and I am in better shape a lot of what Dave Scott says makes a whole lot more sense. With all the other good new stuff out there, this book probably should be a third or fourth choice on every triathlete's reading list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first rate guide to all endurance sports, 7 April 1999
By A Customer
I have done a sub 2h 45' marathon myself and rowed at a reasonably high level. I have also done triathlon and have coached a person who ran sub 2h 25' to win a big marathon and who got international vests at triathlon as well (finishing in the top 30 in the world championships). I say all this just to put my remarks in context. I have read quite a few books on endurance training and this is the one I haven't thrown away. Very helpful indeed. I taught myself to do the front crawl from this book (memories of my older two children, ten years ago, aged 2 and 4, watching me try to copy the arm movements in a French campsite on dry land and taking the mickey - imitating me and running down to the beach to look for pebbles. One observation. As with most US books, the advice on pulse rates is very conservative. If you're training at a high level you can go with higher pulse rates than this. I guess that the publishers are scared of getting sued if someoe ever had a heart attack. So up the beats per minute somewhat if you want to explore the red line. I found the race descriptions beautiful. This is a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent how-to even though somewhat dated, 13 May 1998
By A Customer
This book became my bible as I entered the sport, providing concrete, usable information on the disciplines I was unfamiliar with and tips and reminders on those I thought I already knew. Using Scott's methods, within a year I was consistently finishing in the top 20 percent of the field in my events and, from a restart in my late-30s and seriously out of shape, had lost nearly 100 pounds. This book spells out the facts rather than stifling the reader with a lot of hot air and personal contemplation that, while sometimes interesting, won't do nearly as much in helping you drop your mile pace. Don't expect to get the latest tech info here, however, since the book was published well before gear like aerobars, clipless pedals and tri wetsuits had become mainstream.
