Product Description

Product Description

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like to your dog? Or what it smells like? Do dogs have dreams and, if so, what about? And are dogs really capable of emotion? THE HIDDEN LIFE OF DOGS was a sensational bestseller on first publication and is now considered a classic. In her riveting account of thirty years spent living with dogs, wolves and dingoes, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas provides a fascinating insight into a species very different from our own, yet in many respects surprisingly familiar. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Elizabeth Marshall Thomas is the author of The Harmless People, a non-fiction work about the !Kung Bushmen of southwestern Africa, and of Reindeer Moon, a novel about the paleolithic hunter-gatherers of Siberia, both of which were tremendous international successes. She lives in New Hampshire. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful book!, 5 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I read this book in one sitting, and so has everyone else I have given it to. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas not only has remarkable powers of observation, she also writes beautifully. This is a book that every dog lover should own. Buy a couple -- you will definitely want to pass it on!

2.0 out of 5 stars Life of dogs seen through Rose Coloured glasses, 6 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This book is the story of a pack of dogs firstly left free to roam urban/suburban streets at will, then moved into a very large fenced area where they are left to go completly wild. While the story is somewhat facinating, and well written, the conclusions the author makes about the dogs behaviour are often romantic rather than pragmatic or scientific. She refers to the alpha female as the alpha male's 'Wife', and seems to look for some kind of lifelong anthropomorphic bond is being established between the two when the male alpha regurgitates his food on first sight if the new puppies.

Not recommended if you are looking for some real in-sights into the life and behaviour of dogs. I would recommended any book by Stanley Coren as a good place to start instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Non-Scientific Rubbish, 15 Feb 2008
By Mr. S. A. Bennett (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you know the slightest thing about the scientific study of animal behavior, DO NOT buy this book.
The basis for every argument/discussion raised in this book is based on nothing but anthropomorphic assumptions.
It might be a great read for joe public, but for anyone else it will prove to be a book full of confusing anecdotes which have no scientific basis.
