4.0 out of 5 stars Fairytale quality for older teens and young at heart adults, 7 Feb 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Brenna Fallon lives on her family farm. When she was nine, she invoked an old power that now also resides on her farm as a place of safety for her. But the long ago invocation opened a doorway and something else has also come through. A something that is slowly manifesting itself, and not in a good way. So Brenna is sent a gift from a possible future, if only she can work out how to use it in time to save her present.

This is a great tale in the old fashioned way of telling an interesting yarn. Brenna is a long dog-lover who now works in Pets! as a groomer and clipper. She meets Gil Masera there, and initially the two do not get on but that resolves itself (formulaic perhaps, but it works here). What appealed to me as something different was Brenna's search for a balance between the power she had awakened, and her belief in God. Although I'm not sure I myself believe what Brenna comes to accept, I can understand why she does. I really like the light touches of sci fi (alternative futures, battle of powers for good and evil) which are in the book, although it is set in our `real' world.

The `love story' here is as much between Brenna and her dogs, especially Druid who is sent to her by an alternate future, as between her and Masera. There are some lovely touches throughout the book such as her insightful descriptions of the dogs quirks.

There are faults too - the book is set in USA, but there is a strong English influence that slips from time to time. I got sick to death of Brenna's hair getting in the way - we certainly know more about her (amazing) hair than we do about any other physical feature of hers or indeed anyone in the book. She could for example blush or stammer every now and again, instead of forever tucking the end of her hair into her back pocket (that's how long it is, not that she's pulled it off her head!)

The ending is a highlight - lots of suspense and a natural conclusion to the build up of `good vs evil' throughout the book. Brenna, Druid and Masera are all a natural team by that point, and Durgin has built that team believably and well. And I'm a great one for a happy ending, which this ultimately has. Well worth a read.
