Amazon.co.uk Review
Volume six of the Gateways series stars Peter David's creation, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the starship "Excalibur". Along with his new wife, Elizabeth Shelby, now captain of the "Trident", Calhoun finds himself in the middle of a centuries-long dispute between two non-space-faring peoples who used to inhabit the same world. The Thallonians separated them when they could not be made to talk peace, but now each planet has been provided with a portable Iconian Gateway, which allow instantaneous travel across interstellar distances. The Markanians use theirs to slaughter most of the ruling Aeron family, the Aerons launch a retaliatory raid, and it looks as though the war will escalate once again. Calhoun steps in with his usual cavalier approach to Starfleet protocols, and attempts to stop the bloodshed. The story is well told in David's inimitable style, with several entertaining sub-plots involving the appointment of a new first officer to "Excalibur", two temporally displaced crew trying to catch up on the decades they've lost, and a Bolian Ensign Pheytus, whose name, pronounced "Fetus", provokes much hilarity in Engineering. David has always brought a refreshingly tongue-in-cheek approach to his writing, and this is no exception, bringing a light touch to a story that has its serious side too. And, predictably by now, it ends with captains Calhoun and Shelby passing through a Gateway to face the unknown in the final volume of the series, What Lay Beyond. --Elizabeth Sourbut

Product Description
Scattered throughout the galaxy are Gateways which link star systems across unfathomable distances. The technology that built them has been lost for tens of millennia...but that doesn't mean that it can't be found again. Missing for two hundred millennia, the legendary Iconians have returned, bringing with them the secret of interdimensional teleportatin across vast interstellar distances. Awakened once more, their ancient Gateways are rewriting the map of the galaxy, and nowhere more than in the New Frontier...A century ago, the imperial Thallonians separated two feuding alien races, depositing each of them on a new world safely distant from that of their ancestral enemies. Now, however, the Gateways have made it possible for the long dormant blood feud to begin anew. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun of the U.S.S. Excalibur and his partner, Captain Elizabeth Shelby of the U.S.S. Trident, find themselves fighting a losing battle to keep the horrific violence from escalating, even as they gradually realise the catastrophic danger posed by the Gateways themselves!

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Cold Wars' lives up to the high NF standard, 2 Oct 2001
Having not read any of the other books in the "Gateways" series, I was not sure if that would affect my enjoyment of 'Cold Wars'. I didn't. Peter David brings us his usual high standard combining humour and action with great characters. Calhoun and Shelby's starships are assigned to chase down reports of the Iconians selling Gateway devices. The ships are lead to two planets at war with each other, one side having used the gateway to launch an attack on the royal family of the other.

Introducing or rather reintroducing several new characters and fitting them in seamlessly to the NF frontier creates some interesting moments and each Captains' first officer steal the book at moments during their talks with their respective captains.

All in all a good read and highly recommend for Star Trek or Peter David fans alike

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive!, 8 Oct 2001
My favourite NF book is still "Once Burned" but this one is also definitely one of the very best!
I could see that "Restoration" was indeed the start of a new exciting chapter in the NF saga. "Cold Wars" shows that having two captains, who are married, on two different ships but sharing the same mission is broadening the possibilities the series offers very much. I was carefully optimistic after "Restoration" but now, all my doubts are gone. NF has never been so complex, so interesting, so full of possibilities before!

The main reason why I love NF so much is the Calhoun/Shelby relationship. Not only did I enjoy it to read about their feelings for each other but that both of them are equal partners who complement each other very well. They are both the main characters of NF, as it should be. But also other characters got excellent character stories. Peter David is concentrating on specific characters, but I think that is a strength of the book. Nevertheless, Cold Wars is definitely an ensemble story, forming a basic after the start of the new chapter in "Restoration".

This books is fun to read, it is exciting, it is touching and it often made me think - also in connection with the recent atrocities in the USA. Well done!
