If I'm not mistaken this is the first book Liz Carlyle published, which is unbelievable, to tell the truth! The story: Elliot, marquis of Rannoch and not a particularly likeable person, rides off in a fury to ... um, fire (?) his mistress. Only, he gets lost in the rain, spots a house with warmly lit windows and decides to ask for shelter. When he is invited in he is drawn to the sense of family he feels when hearing and seeing the family's interaction, so when he's mistaken for someone else he doesn't disabuse them of that notion. The house belongs to Evangeline van Artevelde, an artist who also paints portraits, and who thinks Elliot is her next assignment. They are immediately drawn to each other and Elliot finds himself acting in a way totally unlike him, soaking up the warmth and love of Evie and her family. Unfortunately things can't continue the way they are. Evie has secrets, Elliot wants to keep his real life at bay but that doesn't prove to be easy, and then there are the murders... Like all her other subsequent novels, Liz Carlyle writes a rich story, filled with strong emotion, suspense, passion and love. As usual this is an intense novel that packs a punch! I admit, I'm a devoted, slightly obsessed fan :-))
