Product Description

Product Description
From ugly breakups to hysterical breakdowns, hard drugs to hard time, Elvis to Tupac, this encyclopedic collection delivers the full story behind all the calamitous events that have sent rock's royalty down in flames. Plane crashes. Car wrecks. Overdoses. Murders. And of course, lip-synch scandals. Name any kind of tragedy and someone in the rock canon has lived through it, or not. Get ready for the whole scoop on all the info behind BEHIND THE MUSIC, VH-1's popular and addictive documentary series. Chronicling the demise of legends including John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Karen Carpenter, Marvin Gaye and Buddy Holly, CASUALTIES OF ROCK also records more obscure catastrophes: the disappearance of a member of the Manic Street Preachers; the bizarre allergic reaction that afflicted Toto's Jeff Porcaro; and the total identity makeovers of Prince and Cat Stevens. Investigating 'curses' that plague the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead, the Pretenders, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Spinal Tap, this smart and uniquely entertaining book explores the impact of countless horrendous happenings on the history of rock, and pay tribute to the stars who burned too brightly for too short a time.

About the Author
Quinton Skinner is the co-author with Martin Huxley of VH-1 BEHIND THE MUSIC: THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED. He is also the author of DO I LOOK LIKE A DADDY TO YOU?, a guide for new fathers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great starting point in the subject of rock and roll death, 21 April 2003
By K. Harrnacker (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have a little collection of books about rock stars and their deaths. This one seems a good place to start though as it covers pretty much everyone, from superstars to obscure bass players in 70's classic rock groups.

Each person warrants about a page of writing and the scrapbook effect of the photographs is nice, although a little hit-and-miss. It also isn't terribly deep, but this means it provides a good starting point before researching musicians in more detail.

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the darker side of music, but I'd also suggest looking at 'Better to Burn Out: The Cult of Death in Rock 'n' Roll' by Dave Thompson for a slightly deeper look at this subject (albeit with less people).
