5.0 out of 5 stars Dr from the Antipodes, 12 April 2003
By A Customer
In this her third outing, Trish Maguire joins the fight to free Deb Gibbert from a life sentence for the murder of her father. Having heard Deb's account of what happened the night her father died, Trish cannot believe she is a killer. But nearly everyone else thinks she is, including the QC who defended her in court. And Deb's two staunchest supporters, MP Malcolm Chaze and Trish's old frined, TV producer Anna Grayling, have their own, private reasons to want her free ... when one of Deb's supporters is shot dead at his own front door, it is suddenly clear to Trish that Deb's case is far from black and white.
Natasha is going from strength to strength with Trish Maguire - she is human and yet so heroic in her own way. She is so dogged - she does what she feels is right to the death and is sometimes surprised that other people do not share her own intensity of purpose. The other characters who share the book - Deb, the wrongly imprisoned - or is she, prison has wrought some changes; Deb's husband, Adam and elder daughter Kate trying to cope with the wreckage of their family; the faithful George who keeps Trish grounded but still has needs of his own and Trish's father and their prickly but tenuous relationship -- all of them spring from the page as they interact with Trish as she gets more and more deeply involved in trying to prove Deb innocent. Natasha never seems to tease or drape obvious red herrings in your path, it seems to me, you just follow along with Trish learning what she does (although in my case, not really ahead of her and she thinks of things that I would never question, yet having worked for years with lawyers, I know they question everything so it is very believable!) - It is a well crafted plot which gathers momentum as we go along until all is explained. It is also a well crafted story of human relationships and choices made and their repercussions -- in other words, it's her usual high standard which can only enhance her reputation as a writer.
