Product Description

Review
Walter Vatter A Different Light Bookstore Michael Jensen's "Frontiers" has all the "bells and whistles" of a deluxe adventure story: a racing narrative, high drama, vivid images, keen dialogue, even hot sex! I predict John Chapman finds a permanent place on the ever-burgeoning list of gay-positive characters from literature.

Synopsis
Clinging to his dream of building a future for himself on the Western frontier, John Chapman, a young sexual outlaw in late-eighteenth-century America, is rescued from death by a frontiersman who changes the course of his life and teaches him the true meaning of survival.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun read, 22 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Well, this book was not one I would have picked on my own, but I was surprised and found it to be quite fun and offered an interesting twist. It is nice to see the traditional gay theme being interwoven into a different setting - the 'old west'. Although I found the ending to be somewhat overdramatized - I kept thinking that this guy watched too many Wild Wild West and Lone Ranger episodes - and finding it interesting that two "gay" men would find themselves together in the middle of nowhere, the story kept me intrigued.

I hope that this is a beginning of more stories containing infusions of gay themes within historical contexts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant summer reading!, 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I wasn't sure whether I'd like "Frontiers", but as I started reading it, the story just pulled me in.

Many gay novels are either about AIDS (sad) or some superficial group of character (comedy). "Frontiers" is neither and that is certainly a plus.

"Frontiers" takes place in an unlikely time for a gay novel and Michael Jensen describes this time very well. I could picture every scene vividly in my mind. Jensen kept me very interested in the fate of John, our "hero".

5.0 out of 5 stars A most pleasurable read, 7 Oct 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Frontiers (Paperback)
Set at the close of the eighteenth century, Frontiers finds the narrator, twenty four year old John Chapman, escaping for his life following the discovery of his liaison with an English soldier. With a flyer in his pocket promising supplies and a claim as a frontier settler, he makes his way over the Allegheny Plateau just as winter strikes. Somehow he makes it exhausted and starving to Warren his destination and Daniel McQuay, who proves to be in turn his saviour, his lover . . . and finally something else altogether.

Come the spring he makes his way towards Franklin to stake his claim and where he chances lucky as he is directed to a recently vacated plot complete with cabin. The local settlers include the ambitious founder of the settlement, a mysterious lone Indian woman, and a father determined John should marry his surly eldest daughter. However when John encounters the forthright seventeen year old Palmer he recognises the stirrings of passion again, but his previous disastrous love affairs warn him against getting involved with another man once more; but Palmer maybe has other ideas. All seems to go well until troubles from the past catch up with John, and the situation becomes life threatening.

This is an appealing and positive story; John immediately engenders sympathy as the reluctant hero. Lacking confidence he thinks of himself as a failure, always running away, feeling guilty about his love of other men and blaming himself for the seemingly disastrous results of his loves. Yet as the story unfolds events prove otherwise. Admittedly nothing remarkable; yet ones attention his held from start to finish, an involving story that reads remarkably easily; and perhaps it is just that that make it so appealing - a story that reads as effortlessly as breathing.
