A gold medal historical romantic intrigue, 8 May 1999
By A Customer
In 1803 England, six year old identical cousins Anastasia and Breanna Colby vow to assist each other in times of crisis by switching places. With their fathers always fighting, their beloved grandfather turns to them to keep the family intact. He gives a gold coin to Anastasia and a silver coin to Breanna reflecting the fact that the two girls love their respective colors. He tells them never to give away the coins to anyone including their fathers. In 1807, their grandfather died. Anastasia's parents move to Philadelphia to open up an American version of Colby and Sons, the family's successful import-export business. The two cousins stay in touch over the next decade. By 1817, Anastasia becomes an orphan and returns to England to live with her Uncle George and Breanna. Anastasia falls in love with her estate executor, Marquees of Sheldrake, Damen Lockewood, who reciprocates her feelings. However, desperately needing money, George sets in motion a plot that endangers both cousins. THE GOLD COIN, the first historical romance, in Andrea Kane's two-part series, is a fantastic tale that emphasizes the secondary role of women in Polite Society. The story line is filled with suspense and heated romance. The cousins are superb characters and Damen, who can tell them apart, is a great hero. The villains are vile yet in many ways true to the expectations of the Ton. Readers will only have a one-month wait for Breanna's story, THE SILVER COIN, which will be pure gold. Harriet Klausner
