Amazon.co.uk Review
This is volume two of William Shatner's excellent mirror universe trilogy, continuing the story begun in Spectre. Captain James T. Kirk's counterpart, the brutal Tiberius, has turned up in the 24th century, where he threatens to take control of the Federation. Starfleet has been infiltrated by mirror universe doubles, even more difficult to spot than Changelings, and Starfleet Command is worried. Kirk is determined to defeat his evil double, a determination that becomes very personal when an attack on his pregnant wife Teilani, at their wedding celebration, leaves her on the brink of death. At odds with Starfleet over his methods (as usual!), Kirk is assisted by Spock, McCoy, Scotty, the mirror Spock and the mirror Janeway. Working alongside Captain Picard, they attempt to uncover Tiberius's plot. Matters are confused by the mysterious Project Sign, a Starfleet operation so classified that there are no records anywhere of its personnel or advanced ships. Shatner's action-packed story ranges across the galaxy to great effect, setting some of the action on DS9, some aboard the Enterprise-E, and including many of the major characters from all four series. Shatner's writing is reminiscent of his acting--larger than life, at times technically suspect, but hugely energetic and enormous fun. Volume three, Preserver, should be a cracker. --Elizabeth Sourbut --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
With first officer Spock, Dr McCoy and engineer Montgomery Scott at his side, and teamed once more with Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Enterprise-E, Captain James Tiberius Kirk confronts a threat from within the fabric of Starfleet itself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not much plot, 29 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I've read all William Shatner's previous Trek novels, and whilst I hadn't been impressed by his last one, SPECTRE, I thought I'd give him another chance. DARK VICTORY is an improvement on its predecessor (although that isn't really saying much), but the plot is much weaker. If this were a movie, it'd be one of those where you could fall asleep for half an hour and not miss anything. Sometimes it feels like you're reading a short story padded out to 300 pages. But that said, Shatner's writing style seems to have improved somewhat (although he still has an annoying habit of using sentences of 2 or 3 words which mess up the rhythm of the text), and the chapters set aboard DS9, with Garak, capture the character so perfectly that you can almost hear Andrew Robinson speaking the lines. The novel is worth buying for these alone, but wait until it's out in paperback first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Characters spot on, story a little weaker, 12 Oct 1999
By A Customer
I was surprised when I picked up The Return many moons ago to discover that Bill can actually write a good Star Trek novel. The characters are nearly perfect and everything's so familiar you can sit down and read it all in one go. In Dark Victory a chase ensues between Kirk and his nemesis Tiberius whilst in the background is the mysterious and suspicious covert Starfleet organisation Project Sign. The story doesn't live up to the predecessors in the sequence (The Return, Avenger and Spectre) and barely plods along in areas. Still, if you do read those books (and you should) then you'll have to read this too which is no bad thing.
