Product Description

Sunday Telegraph
"It is hard to believe there will be a better cricket book out this summer"

Product Description
Ed Smith has kept a private diary of his county career since he made his debut for Kent in 1986. But this season, encouraged by Australian captain Steve Waugh, he decided to do it properly. 'Tell the truth as much as you can' was Waugh's injunction. This then is the story of a season of county cricket, one that begins tumultuously with the horrific pre-season eye injury to captain David Fulton, and by mid-July is turning to triumph as Smith becomes the first batsman in the summer to reach 1000 runs. It's the story of the hanging in there and the holding on, the self-doubt and the frustration, the rows and the friendships.

4.0 out of 5 stars The stimulating inside track, 30 May 2005

The inside track on the highs and lows of life as a professional sportsman; Ed Smith's combination of broad-mindedness, philosophical outlook and undoubted writing skills make for a stimulating book which is a cut above the standard one-dimensional county pro's diary. Recommended to cricket fans and admirers of good writing alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as expected, 14 Jun 2004
By A Customer
after his excellent first book, I was expecting another quality book, especially since I also support Kent.

The book is very self absorbed, there are some good points about batting, but it does get tiresome with Ed constantly analysing his batting.

I was hoping for more gossip about Kent and England and how the team interlinks and any tension between team players, but there was virtually none of this

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 28 Jan 2005
By J. E. Davidson (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The cricket diary has become a rather tired format and I'm afraid that Ed Smith does not succeed in breathing new life into it.

I greatly enjoyed Ed Smith's first book (Playing Hard Ball) and was looking forward to this one, however, I was rather disappointed.

Ed Smith is likeable and interesting man (at least in print) and there are interesting sections but overall it does not manage to rise above the mundane (and very occasionally, for example the chapter about Bruce Springsteen, it is rather poor). I enjoyed the sections on his trip to India and some of the technical analysis but ultimately this book offers little new and did not ever really grab my attention.

There are many better cricket books available.
