Fabulous illustrsation by Britain's leading female artist, 15 Aug 1999

Mary Fedden goes from strength to strength. She is a longstanding pillar of the British art establishment: tutor at the Royal College of Art in the 1960's, now a member of the Royal Academy and honoured with the O.B.E., with her works included in the Tate and in every other major British collection. She has achieved the rare combination of critical acclaim and popular adoration. In Motley The Cat we see all the reasons for her success. Each page of this delightful book is covered with Fedden's watercolours. However these are not paintings transferred to the pages of a book. Each picture is skilfully composed to suit its own space and the printers have managed to preserve the freshness of the paintings in reproduction. In particular nothing has been lost of Fedden's masterful use of tone to suggest the mystery and magic of the central character, Motley. A brilliant achievement by Britain's leading contemporary female artist.
