Product Description

Product Description

Sequel to the first volume of Dirk Bogarde's autobiography "A Postillion Struck by Lightning". Seen through the eyes of a 10-year old in the late 1930s, this novel recaptures an idyllic childhood, a time of love and gentleness with its sounds and scents intact, whilst the world beyond went to war.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages, 24 April 2002
By R. Akel (Chile/UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found Great Meadow to be an unusual sort of book for many reasons. First of all, the language is really that of a 12 year old boy, but at the same time it is beautiful, precise, evocative yet unsentimental.
The economy of words, characteristic of the style of the book, does not prevent the characters to stand out clearly as real people the reader can empathise with. The dialogues are natural and sound real, and at the same time there is so much more meaning (about the relationships among the people, their motivations and their fears) behind apparently simple, everyday speech.
This is a true picture of a period that is gone, and by reading Great Meadow one thinks, for a moment, that the people and places have been brought to life.
I recommend it as a book to read, to keep, and re-read. Suitable and interesting for all ages.

I purchased this book for an American friend - she is collecting Dirk Bogarde writings.

It was in excellent condition, as described, and arrived within 48 hours of order placement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Meadow, 2 Jul 2009
By Mrs. V. Russell - See all my reviews

No problems with the order going as a gift to another address. Quick efficient delivery of a great read."An evocation" is the perfect sub title as it captures a lost period of a quintessentially middle classs "British" childhood. I've read it countless times.
