5.0 out of 5 stars the best presentation I've seen of antidepressant research, 5 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This book has helped me a great deal. If you're taking prescription antidepressants and have gotten inadequate relief or if you think that you've "tried everything", think again, buy this book, and prepare yourself to be surprised. A vast amount of research over the past three decades has been done to establish the solid antidepressant effects of a variety of free-form amino acids and amino acid derivatives and vitamins and other nutrients. Syd Baumel has read the full-text journal articles, and he takes the reader through all the details in an objective, systematic way, and every "assertion" he makes is rigorously referenced. The book is really a classic because it unveils the sheer number of possibilities that exist for a person with depression. You will believe that depression is very treatable.

I used the references to get journal articles on topics I wanted to read more about, and doing this has shown me that there is really no error in the entire book--not even an error of omission or an exaggeration. And Syd writes with style. Furthermore, he doesn't take the stand that many alternative medicine writers do--he doesn't dismiss prescription antidepressants as worthless with a few sentences and then claim that nutrients are somehow fundamentally safer or superior. His writing is scientifically accurate and unbiased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of alternatives for treating depression., 23 Jul 1997
By A Customer
This book covers many alternatives to treating depression, most of which employ readily obtainable vitamins and herbs, or feature cognitive or exercise programs. The author urges readers to rate the options as they read each chapter, and to return to those that appeared promising. Many treatments are accompanied by bullet lists to help readers assess their applicability to their present situation. While the author does not go into very much depth, he does help readers sort through options and determine plans, as well as locate additional material for each alternative.
