5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T MISS THIS, 6 Aug 2004
Jonathon Kinkead has produced a masterpiece of Luthiery Literarture with this fine book.

I am an amateur guitarmaker and have nearly every book on the subject available, and this is buy far the best. It has clear and concise instructions, that at no point caused any confusion, incredible diagrams (all in colour) and it is written with a good sense of humour besides.

The included blueprint is well drawn and good quality, although thicker paper would have been nice.

This book, which shows alternative ways of doing many operations, is EXCELLENT value, and is well worth the price of admission, I can't recomment it highly enough

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb manual, worth its weight in gold., 2 Nov 2004
By Aidan Nolan (Hertfodshire, England) - See all my reviews
I bought this book (and others) well in advance of an intensive one week instrument making course. The method adopted by our tutor involved the use of a simple internal mould which may have suited an experienced luthier, but I found it awkward!
Armed with my new found skills and experience I am already planning my next guitar using Kinkead's method... once this one is finished of course!!
Jonathan Kinkead's book is an absolute marvel of communication. It is full of high quality colour photos, excelent graphics and is extremely well put together.
The text flows logically and is very concise, giving a detailed account without waffle, of how the 'Kingsdown' guitar is constructed... just what you need when you are trying to absorb the process.
This book will not tell you how to hold a plane or go into minute detail over the finer points of woodworking. As with all skills there comes a point where you have to put down the books and pick up the tools. Build Your Own Acoustic Guitar will, together with the excellent set of plans, tell you exactly what you need to know to construct a steel string acoustic. Read it carefully... its all there! You will find other books on this subject which go into much more detail ('Guitarmaking Tradition & Technology' for example) which are good reference works, but nothing quite so enjoyable to read, or which inject as much enthusiasm or give you the confidence that you can do it!
Buy it... I promise you won't be disappointed.
