"Any book supporting the normal progress of labour is welcome; this one provides many interesting and practical tips, particularly in relation to psycho–social support measures."
Helen Cheyne, University of Stirling --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for promoting normality, 7 Mar 2008
I actually never came across this book as a student but have recently bought it as a NQ midwife and wish I'd had it earlier. Denis Wash recommended it at a recent study day and its certainly given me a lot of tips and answered questions that I didn't even know I had.

There are chapters on normal labour, positions, psycho-emotional state, auscalation, monitoring progress, OP position, what to do when there's no progress, fatal malposition, prolonged labour, non-pharmalogical pain relief.

I really think this book is going to help develop my practice a lot and hopefully mean that I will become increasingly more proactive in aiding women to have the best birth expereince possible.

i have only been a student midwife for 4 months and have found this book to be a really good and easy read so much so that it has given me an insight to the complicated childbirth we are due to start next month

the toolkit at the end of the book which discuss the different positions and comfort measure are really usefull and i have been able to use this advice in my practice on placement

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing help for difficult birth, 18 Feb 2009
I am not a nurse or midwife, but when my doctor told me I was to give birth to a large baby due to his analysis of the ultrasound (he basically tried to scare me out of natural birth), I searched franctically for help online. This book is excellent for women who want to own their birthing process and not leave it all to the healthcare practionners. I currently live in Germany, did not attend prenatal classes because of language barrier, and it helped me understand better the various birthing positions and how they can help. At birth, I remembered all of it, and my partner was right there with me. Even though I had unforeseen complications with my hips, it made it all possible for me to try first for a natural birth, even if we had to end it with a cesarian for the health of the baby.
