Product Description
Synopsis
Written by the author of "Anatomy of the Aeroplane" and "Design of the Aeroplane", this book should be of use to private and professional pilots, operators, design engineers, test pilots and flying schools, universities and colleges worldwide. This book is a simple guide on performance and handling qualities, trouble-shooting and "fixes". It tells pilots and all who are interested in the finer points of aeronautics how to heed and diagnose what aircraft say before attempting to put them right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for anybody working in flight testing, 5 April 2001
Darrol's book is not only the best, it is the only thorough book about flight testing and aircraft handling qualities in English. Although it concentrates upon light aircraft issues (which is unsurprising given that he was the CAA's senior light aircraft test pilot for some years) most of it is equally applicable to the testing of larger aircraft.

I consider this book an essential fixture on my desk, and refer to it constantly. If working in this field, frankly the only other way to gain this sort of knowledge is to have attended one of the military test pilots' schools (I did, but used this book as well). For the general reader, it may come across as somewhat deeper than most pilots will ever need, but nonetheless is a natural progression from books such as Kermode's "Flight without formulae". It certainly offers an incredibly deep level of knowledge for people who need that.

My only criticism of the book, is that it is a little weak on planning and safety issues - for which reason I would normally recommend an incomer to flight testing to supplement it with Vaughan Askew's "Flight Testing Homebuilt Aircraft".
