This is a sensitive and helpful book for those who have experienced the loss of someone close to them, as a result of suicide. I read it several years ago when I was in this position and it helped me, particularly in the sense of reading other people's stories who had been through this. It is a particularly dreadful type of bereavement often accompanied by agonising feelings of guilt, anger and powerlessness - to name just a few of the awful emotions.
As well as telling different 'survivors' (as in person left behind) stories, it also deals with some of the more general problems and feelings one might encounter. It also offers some hope at a time when you might feel you will never feel ok or 'normal' again.
The most helpful thing I read in this book - which I initially found hard to FEEL, although I KNEW it to be true, was this:-

'Perhaps the hardest and lowest point of grief that survivors experience in the wake of suicide is the feeling of powerlessness. Having struggled with questions of their own role in the death - how they failed and what they might have done to keep that person alive - they must finally come face to face with the limitations of their responsibility. In the end, we cannot keep another person alive; we cannot exercise that kind of power over another life, no matter how closely connected with it we are' (page 11)
