5.0 out of 5 stars THE best Point Horror Book, 25 Aug 2009
By Dismal Angel "Ash" (Scotland) - See all my reviews

Read this when I was around twelve or thirteen and it was THE book that got me not only into reading, but re-ignited my passion for horror stories.

Martha, a decidedly plain and homely blonde, moves to a new town with her father to live with her new stepmother Sally and her annoyingly aloof strange stepbrother Connor. Martha finds that trying to get used to her new home is increasingly unsettling when the curtains like to move on their own, and strange shadows lurk in her bedroom when she sleeps.

At the local hardware store, Martha meets and befriends Wynn, a friendly but traumatised high school girl who is still reeling from the death of her best friend Elizabeth only a year before. Wynn confides in Martha that Elizabeth had lived in the house that Martha's family have just moved into, and that the poor girl was killed brutally in Martha's very bedroom a year ago on Halloween by her boyfriend Dennis, a foul-tempered bad boy who disappeared after Elizabeth's death. Wynn is only reminded more of the fact of Elizabeth's death by Martha's uncanny resemblence to her.

As the dark shadows and strange sounds continue to manifest in the creepy old house, Martha begins to despair that either she is being haunted, or that Dennis has returned thinking Elizabeth has lived all this time.

I have to say this is definately THE best Point Horror book that was ever written, it has mystery, romance, suspense, and horror all wrapped up into one. The writing is great, it's a good un-put-downable read that is so vivid you could almost imagine it being a movie. Good for teens, but even as an adult I went back to reading it and it was still quite satisfying and good for nostalgia. Reminds you of the kind of stuff that really came before the craze of Twilight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately a "Treat"!, 23 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Well, Richie Tankersley Cusick does it again with this spooky, romantic, and at times even actually scary, young adult novel. For those who enjoy Cusick's unique recipe of romance, mystery and horror, 'Trick or Treat' will not fail to tantalise the tastebuds, with classic trademark ingredients such as the irresistable yet doomed to be persecuted heroine, the two signature love-interests (one nice and wholesome, the other excuding mystery and danger, yet invariably attractive), enough suspects to form a football team, and, as always, a masterful, eyes glued to the page, edge of the seat ending that only Cusick, from all the Point Horror series writers, seems able to achieve. The relationship between Martha (the protagonist) and Conor (her new step-brother) is especially electric, if at times positively verging on the incestuous. Overall, I feel the mystery element works very well, and the reader is constantly unsure of who the perpetrator may be. One thing I love about Cusick's books is the fact that up until the very last second the reader is left in a state of uncertainty, with Cusick throwing red herrings at us left, right and centre. So, if you're looking for thrills, spills and chills (but not necessarily literary genius) treat yourself to this classic Cusick.
