The TiVo is basically a computer running Linux that has been designed to be good at recording and playing TV programs. This book covers various ways in which you can tweak your TiVo to make it do more.
Some of the hacks are simple handset hacks that will change TiVo's behaviour in minor ways, like adding a clock to the TV display. Others are full-fledged Unix programs that require a network link to your TiVo and a reasonable amount of technical knowledge, not to mention confidence.
In theory, by following this book's hacks, you will be able to get stock quotes and weather reports on your TiVo, use it to play MP3s and display pictures, and even get your email on it. In practice, it's not quite that simple.
Many of the hacks don't work on Series 1 TiVos, which is the only type that was available in the UK. Anything for a Series 2 machine or a DirecTiVo won't work on a UK box. Also, some of the hacks are US-centric: the weather reports mentioned above are for the US only, for example. The book is also prone to a problem that is outside the control of the author or publisher: some of the software that is required is only available from particular web sites, and some of them just aren't operating any more.
In general, this is a great book for anyone with a TiVo who wants to get more use from it and isn't afraid to risk turning it into a high-tech paperweight. If you're prepared to buy and fit a network card to your TiVo, you could do a lot worse than read this book to let you know what's required, and how you can benefit when it's done.
