Review

"Less a pocket reference and more a short introduction, this inexpensive book is a good choice for anyone who wants to improve their web searching with a light investment of money and time." - Gavin Inglis, news@UK, March 2004

Product Description

Beneath its deceptively simple search form, Google is a remarkably powerful and flexible search engine that indexes billions of web pages, handling more than 150 million searches a day. You know that what you're looking for must be in there somewhere, but how do you make Google work for you? Crafted from our best-selling Google Hacks title, the Google Pocket Guide provides exactly the information you need to make your searches faster and more effective, right from the start. The Google Pocket Guide unleashes the power behind that blinking cursor by delivering:
  • A thorough but concise tour of Google's features
  • Practical examples to inspire going beyond the basic keyword search
  • Secrets for constructing more powerful queries using Google's special syntax
  • Advice on how to understand and further refine the results Google provides
Whether you're a student researching a topic for class, a medical or legal professional needing field-specific reference information, or a home user looking for that article on home repair you forgot to bookmark, the Google Pocket Guide will take you from mystified to mastery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch!, 12 Nov 2003
By R. Grant "RobGrant" (London, UK.) - See all my reviews

You wouldn't generally expect too much from any 'pocket guide' but this is a little gem and well worth buying. I do a lot of online research, at work, at home and with the kids for their homework and 10 minutes after reading this and applying the lessons learned, my results have improved a thousandfold and more importantly I'm spending less time working through irrelevant results and more time being productive with the results I do get. I'm well-pleased with it and can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable! Second edition long overdue!, 16 Jun 2009
By MT (England) - See all my reviews
Let's face it: most people just key in a couple of search terms and by some miracle of miracles what they are after usually surfaces among the first couple of hits. The authors of this book acknowledge this, and attribute it to the very clever ranking algorithms Google uses, and its ability to adapt as the Web evolves. But they immediately demonstrate that, just by learning a little bit about how Google works, the gains can increase tenfold. It amazes me that a tiny book like this can help unleash the incredible power of Google.
I am a research scientist and have used Google and other, more specialised search engines for years. And yet, this book taught me how to make my searches even more specific while making sure important data don't slip through the net. It also taught me some very nifty tricks on how to extract the key information from the data I'm after, and this can be applied beyond Google.
Thoroghly recommended, although it may soon need some updating as the Google interface, although amazingly simple, has changed a bit from when this book was published; so have the services offered (more than just a bit!). Still, the key concepts and syntax are the same!
