Product Description

Product Description
Web services are poised to become a key technology for a wide range of Internet-enabled applications, spanning everything from straight B2B systems to mobile devices and proprietary in-house software. While there are several tools and platforms that can be used for building web services, developers are finding a powerful tool in Microsoft's .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET. Designed from scratch to support the development of web services, the .NET Framework simplifies the process--programmers find that tasks that took an hour using the SOAP Toolkit take just minutes. Programming .NET Web Services is a comprehensive tutorial that teaches you the skills needed to develop web services hosted on the .NET platform. Written for experienced programmers, this book takes you beyond the obvious functionality of ASP.NET or Visual Studio .NET to give you a solid foundation in the building blocks of web services, and leads you step-by-step through the process of creating your own. Beginning with a close look at the underlying technologies of web services, including the benefits and limitations, Programming .NET Web Services discusses the unique features of the .NET Framework that make creating web services easier, including the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and the namespaces used in .NET programming. Filled with numerous code examples using the C# language, the book leads you through some of the more challenging issues of web services development, including the use of proxies, marshalling of complex data types, state management, security, performance tuning and cross-platform implementation. The book also covers:
  • Creating and publishing your first web service
  • The UDDI project, tModels and what they mean for web service publishers Securing web service applications
Written for programmers who are familiar with the .NET Framework and interested in building industrial-strength web services, Programming .NET Web Services is full of practical information and good old-fashioned advice.

From the Publisher

For those interested in building industrial-strength web services, this book is full of practical information and good old-fashioned advice.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best .Net books I have read, 2 May 2003
By M. HAMMOND (Bournemouth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is hard to find .Net books that are pitched at the right level of understanding. I feel this one gets it just right. No nonsense, a lot of good information and a quick easy read. It assumes you already have a good understanding of .Net Framework so really restricts itself to just telling you about Web Services. It also goes into just the right amount of detail to give a thorough understanding without getting too dull.
It is really only a description of how to use the technology however and I would have liked to have seen a few more recommendations for good practice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative book, 20 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This book has everything to know about .NET web services. The coverage is perfect for any average user, just at the correct level of detail. Neither too deep to make you bore nor shallow to disappoint you. I am currently designing web services for my company and it helped in areas such as - passing and returning complex data types in a web service method, asynchronous web services, caching, etc. The writing is simple and easy to follow. The sample code is in C#.
The only disappoint I have with this book is that it does not cover the publish/subscribe or event notification mechanism in any detail. Looking at the time this book was written, I can understand why these were not covered. Otherwise excellent book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Error ridden but best over-all detailed intro around, 3 Sep 2005
By Paul Schwartzberg (Berlin, Germany) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are errors in this seriously written book. But it seems the best over-all summary of the subject around.

More effort could have been done in cogent "taking the entire picture type of writting", if only a couple paragraphs, before delving into detail. But on the other hand the book does cover the subject matter with introductory examples and in detail.

Although infomative, it is also a bit dry.

Insofar as the reader is interested in a detail level coverage of the facinating world of .NET Web Services, this text is recommend.
