5.0 out of 5 stars The book you need to write MIDlets, 10 Sep 2003
Hi there,
as part of my MSc Project I had to do plenty of research on Java and mobile devices. So before I started I didn't even know what was available from Java.
Now I can tell you that there are two main configurations: CLDC and CDC.
If you want to develop for Pocket PC devices, then you choose CDC.
If you want to develop for Palm devices, phones, and any most small devices, then you choose CLDC.

Well, if you go for the second configuration, this is the book you want to buy.

From day one you'll be able to write a HelloWorld and test it on an emulator in your computer (I just prefered it to start with because it was faster than using my Palm). But, after a few days you'll realise that you need to know Java before you can carry on. So, my advice, don't start with this book without previous Java knowlege. Otherwise, it's the best book to learn how to program for small devices.

One last thing, at the beginning it'll explain a general view of Java and small devices, so you'll know the different configurations, profiles, etc. But it won't explain them in detail, so, if you are after an explanation of all the configurations, you'd need additional materials.

Have fun reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a decent book and useful beyond the "learning" phase, 20 Jun 2003
By C. C. Williams - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is clear, concise and very well written introduction to J2ME. The author assumes that you're already an accomplished Java programmer and so is able to ignore Java fundamentals. It covers everything from getting the toolkits and actually using them, through GUI programming and event handling, networking and midlets and using the record store (a small structured database for storing application data) to deploying your wireless applications to real devices. It's about a year-and-a-half old and so not cutting edge, but as an introductory text you can't beat it. The quality of the content means that this book remains useful even when you've finished learning wireless Java.
