Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In attempting to provide technical descriptions for the full breadth of Oracle's product set, Oracle Essentials does not lack for ambition. Herein are descriptions of Oracle's system files and processes and their interactions, plus the whole range of database features (from data-types and data-storage mechanisms, through security and performance features and including coverage of Oracle's support for parallel processing, OLTP systems, data warehousing and distributed systems). Installation and database maintenance, as well as the more common database development tasks, are also covered.

All of the above is well written but in necessarily concise terms, meaning Oracle Essentials is likely to be of insufficient depth to the day-to-day Oracle user. However Oracle Essentials is an excellent introduction to, and overview of, Oracle technology, especially for those looking to fill the void between the Oracle sales brochures and the many doorstopper reference manuals. --Michael O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly an excellent overview!!!, 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
As a book to provide the reader with a profound overview of what Oracle is about, it is more than useful, also the comparison between the 3 major versions of oracle (8,8i,9i) was intuitive. The book is useful to beginners as well as a reference to experienced users who may need to read up on some theory.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing lack of details, 26 Oct 2004

(REAL NAME)
Normally any book from O'Reilly is great for focusing practical information to get you up and running. Not so with Oracle Essentialls. This book provides an overview of Oracle theory, with very little detail for actual usage.

Example: Tools for Creating Databases. The book mentions you can use the java GUI or the "character-mode scripts". Unfortunately, no advice is given on where to locate the GUI or the character-mode scripts. Further, no examples of running the scripts exist at all - not even the name!

In all, I found this a disappointing offering. If you're looking for a broad overview of Oracle this might be a useful book. If you actually need to bring an Oracle system up and running, this won't be much help.
