5.0 out of 5 stars Gift Tag, 29 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This collection of short stories took my breath away. The author manages to keep an authentic voice for his characters while still conveying his ideas in a strong and intelligent way.
My personal favourite from the collection was 'Gift Tag Attached To An Unremarkable Piece Of Crockery'. It addresses important cultural themes and interactions through a the voice of a strong central character. Although a physical description of the narrator is never given the reader knows all they need to know about the character from the voice and the manner in which the story is told. An intensely believable, fallible human being struggling to come to terms with a new life and the new cultural interactions that result.
The themes addressed in this book are very complex and many established writers would find it hard to write about them in such a compelling and thoughtful way. The devastating impact of the loss of an industry, identity and culture in a world that is becoming increasingly homogenised and, at the heart of it all is love.
A fantastic collection of stories from a fresh new voice in literature. Five stars.
