2.0 out of 5 stars Five Nights in Amsterdam, 10 Mar 2004
Kim's style is excessively verbose. His dialogue is stilted and unnatural. Characters make unrealistic little declarations to each other. Nothing seems to happen and it takes an awfully long time to get anywhere. It's irritating when a travel novel cannot even get the names of places right. There is no such place as the Rembrantplatz in Amsterdam! It's the Rembrantplein. The novel seems to consist of a rather pathetic, lonely and unlikeable traveller ordering diet cokes and fast food in a succession of Dutch railway stations and being terribly wholesome ,slightly preachy and generally patronising. I found the anti-semitic outburst in Utrecht train station a bit creepy. How much of that little diatribe was the views of an imaginary character? The hero, whilst having Jewish friends (of course he did) did nothing to put the record straight and in fact adds a little to the perenial "Jews have too much power" gripe. This one gets a big YAWN from me. The whole plot could be summed up in a pamphlet.

1.0 out of 5 stars atrocious, 16 Feb 2005
By Alasdair McKie (Kilmarnock, Scotland) - See all my reviews
"Five nights in Amsterdam" is in my opinion a very poor example of a travel novel. The story line was slow, predictable and lacking in the twists and turns of plot that enthral and hold the reader's attention.

The setting appears to be purely coincidental to the story, which is based on an American traveller (Johnny) who seeks to form relationships with various women. Johnny approaches every woman in exactly the same brusque and overbearing fashion. I fear for any female unfortunate enough to be sitting next to a 'Johnny-like' person on a plane or bus.

I agree with the other reviewer's suggestion that the novel contains messages within it that are anti-Semitic. I feel that author showed a lack of sensitivity towards Dutch Jews, especially when you consider how badly they were treated under the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II.

No information about the various cities, museums, restaurants and activities on offer to prospective tourists in the Netherlands is given.

When I consider the qualities of this book as a travel novel or a romantic story, I feel it fails on both accounts.

Prospective travellers to the Netherlands should avoid this novel on all accounts.
