Product Description

Young Mikey Quinn, scavenging on the streets of Hull, is thrown into prison for stealing a rabbit from the butcher. His chief accuser, a well-to-do lawyer, has a daughter, Eleanor, whom he badly mistreats. When Mikey is released he finds that his mother has died and his brothers taken into the workhouse - determined to find a better life for his family, he walks all the way to London to seek his fortune. There he finds that the grim realities of city life are even worse than they were in Hull, and comes under the evil patronage of the sinister Tully, first encountered when he was in prison. But he also meets Eleanor again, and between them they face the dangers of London and gradually make a new life for themselves. Together they have to face journeying back to Hull - the long walk home.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Long Walk Home, 13 Feb 2009

The Long Walk Home
This book is the latest in a long line of good easy to read books that both myself and the wife have really enjoyed, I buy her the latest out each Christmas and then have to wait until she has read it before I can. Finished it last night and can't wait until the next one. This one starts and finishes in Hull with the bulk set in the mid 1850-60s in London and charts the lives of some well of and far from well off youngsters who meet up and manage to survive the privations of the times. I say again, a good read that flows well and has a happy ending which is good in this day and age.

5.0 out of 5 stars The long walk home, 15 May 2009
By Mrs. Gillian Morris "jewel nut" (Hull E>Yorks) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Valerie Wood brings such realism to her writing you feel as though you are experiencing the very things the subjects of her books experience! She brings her characters to life and you feel their every emotion. This book, again, does just that. Set in Victorian England, as all her books are, she takes you through Mikey and Ellies adventures after both leaving Hull for very different reasons. Mikey lives in poverty and Ellie comes from a priviledged background, however they both find themselves struggling when they meet up in London and their experiences bring them together to unite them regardless of their backgrounds. As ever Valerie Wood manages to highlight the appalling poverty that was predominant in Victorian times , but at the same time she highlights how much of a community spirit there was in those terrible times. People trusted each other and no matter how hard up they were they were always willing to help out their neighbour! What a lesson for us all!
As I live in the area that her books refer to, I have an affinity with these characters and places. I have read every book Valerie Wood has written and she has never disappointed me! My only complaint would be that she does not write fast enough!!!! I have to wait too long for the next read!
Well worth a read in my opinion.
Jill Morris
