Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
In The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoterica culled from 2,000 years of Western history.

A murder in the silent after-hours halls of the Louvre reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his daughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's father's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, Neveu and Langdon embark on a breathless flight through France, England and history itself.

Brown has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought. --Jeremy Pugh, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, 28 Mar 2004
By Bert Ruiz "author/journalist" (Pleasantville, NY) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
"The Da Vinci Code," has created quite a bit of fanfare within the reading community in the United States. It almost appears that everyone is talking about it, everyone has read it or is reading it and practically everyone is urging others to read it. On that note, any avid reader will naturally raise an eyebrow and question whether any book can possible be that good. To this end, I must honestly report that Dan Brown's book is actually better than expected.

In a nutshell, this book is a thriller. The reader will be entertained from beginning to end. Brown has authored a masterpiece...it is polished...and has no weaknesses. Consequently, I urge any business person who is taking a long trip and will spend many hours in airports and flying...to pick up this book. I don't think its fair to share the plot with you. I don't want to spoil the fun. Of all the books I have reviewed for Amazon to date..."The Da Vinci Code" is by far the most entertaining. Highly recommended.

Bert Ruiz

2.0 out of 5 stars From a victim of hype, 16 Oct 2003
By Vagras (Seoul, South Korea) - See all my reviews
As an expat in Seoul, I have limited access to newly released English language novels, and when my family came over from Britain to visit recently, a copy of The Da Vinci Code was high on the list of books I asked them to bring with them. The reviews had all been glowing and I really looked forward to reading this. It all turned out to be a bit of an anticlimax.

Before I continue, I do want to say that this could have been a lot worse, I just don't think that it is anywhere near as good as we have all been told. Okay, I grant you that it was a bestseller, but that is merely an indicator that the punters have listened well to where they have been told to spend their money. I am however included in that group, so full marks to the Bantam marketing department for that.

It is a nice concept, and blends supposed historical fact with some very nice ideas into a story that whisks the reader along at a fair old lick. But I felt that this was its downfall. It was over so quickly I was wondering what I had missed. I appreciate that the author was trying to convey the sense of speed as this book covers only the period of a couple of days, but so much I felt was left out. I certainly felt that he killed off two central characters far too quickly, and I believe that unless you can manage a plot twist as skillfully as the ending of the movie 'The Usual Suspects', then at least grant your reader the tiniest amount of information that may indicate something interesting is coming. Also, the unveiling of 'The Teacher' was very clumsily done, essentially rendering all the previous story line regarding the Catholic church pointless, even if it was planned to be the bait in the plot twist trap.

All in all, I think it was a good try, but it just fell too short of the mark for me, maybe another 100 pages would have allowed the author to really do his interesting concept justice. It was entertaining, and for someone looking for some mind candy to take on holiday I would recommend it, but I would also recommend that you do not waste your luggage allowance taking it back home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrill a minute, thought provoking and conspiratorial, 22 April 2004
This book was finished last night, with a smile and a satisfied feeling. After taking me through excitement, puzzlement and quite a few twists, Iwas happy and intrigued by the ending, although a little exhausted!
After providing us with one known character and one new character, DanBrown, blasts us into 24hrs, or so, of their new journey together. Hedelivers a concise and summarised list of facts, theories andconspiracies, woven together in an exciting and breathtaking story. Whilst you know that you are reading a very good work of fiction, thereare enough gems of factual information to make you think "Mmmmmm"! Whilstother reviewers have pointed out that this information is available inother books (a list of at least 6), for those readers new to thesetheories, it is much more helpful to be able to digest from onepublication. Further research can then be entered into, if desired.
I was spurred into a few searches on the internet myself, to peruse DaVinci's paintings, for the clues, and to read up on the Priory of Sion andOpus Dei.
There have hardly been any books in my life that I have read and simplycould not put down. This book is one of them. The story of clues andevents, makes you want to "just see what happens in the next chapter", allthe way through the book.
Well done Mr Brown, you have captured my imagination and I shall bewatching for you future publications.
