Works for those it's written for!, 4 Jun 2006
It's interesting to see the variety of reviews on here: some people are amazed at the results they have experienced, others are complaining it hasn't helped them at all.
My mum and I have been using the book and CD since January- it's not worked for her at all, but I've lost a stone and a half. All I can conclude is that the success of McKenna's system must really depend on the reasons why you over-eat. If, like I used to, you comfort eat, or have obsessive eating habits (you have to eat at a certain time or eat food in a certain order), if you binge eat and starve yourself alternately, or have a grasping attitude towards food then this is definitely for you. The CD helps you to feel so much more relaxed around food and makes you pay close attention to what you are actually putting into your body- someone complained that a diet which says "eat what you want" can be nothing but dangerous but the fact is you end up actually wanting to eat the right things.
Alot of reviewers have complained that this is just basic common sense in a pretty package. Eat slowly, drink water, take exercise, eat when you're hungry, etc. Yes, it's obvious; but if simply knowing what is good for us was enough, no one would be overweight! As another reviewer has pointed out, it's not WHAT Paul McKenna is telling people in this book that makes it good. Of course it's all common sense. What makes it work is the way he motivates the reader. THAT is what you're paying for. It's all very well saying "take exercise? Well, duh!" but this book actually makes you WANT to take exercise, and enjoy it. It makes you WANT to eat healthy, natural food. It enables you to have TOTAL CONTROL over your eating habits. It makes you pause when you would usually turn to food and ask yourself why and what you are eating.
If this is what you need in order to lose weight, this will work for you. If not... perhaps you won't find it so helpful. If you don't want to waste your money, ask yourself before you buy it whether this system will deal with the reasons why you over-eat.

Truly amazing, 15 Feb 2005
By A Customer
I've been overweight since childhood and my lifelong attempts to slim down had left me with an unhappy, love/hate relationship with food characterised by yo-yo dieting, periods of bingeing and a tendency towards "emotional eating" and constant obsessing about food. Since reading Paul's book a week ago and using the CD each evening, all that has gone. I eat what I want when I want and feel completely in control, but I'm eating less than I used to overall and automatically picking a balanced diet. I have definitely lost weight already - he tells you not to weigh yourself for two weeks, but my clothes feel looser and I look slimmer. I'd pretty much given up hoping to be slim but this feels like a miracle .... and so simple and enjoyable it will make you angry you wasted all that time listening to "official" diet advice from doctors and slimming gurus.

Four months on.....still amazing!, 12 Dec 2005
This is an update of the review I posted in September as I wanted to give a longer-term opinion of Paul's system. I've been using it for 4 months + a bit (since beginning of August 2005) and am DELIGHTED to report that I've lost 14 lb in that time - virtually NO effort after the first month or so, very few cravings, not much exercise if I'm honest (working on that) and I'm getting rid of too-big clothes at a rate to make the local jumble sale organisers very grateful indeed. I confess that I've thought I've lost the plot a few times (maybe hormonal influences) but that's where the infrequent weighing comes in (I weigh once a month now)- it does all even out if you give it a long enough time. This system is SO obvious, so natural, and designed to get your brain back in harmony with your body. It's fantastic to hear Paul say (very firmly!) "You can trust yourself" after years of being told by WeightWatchers et al that you can't!! Finally, just to add that if you get home feeling peckish but not hungry, tired, fed up - listening to the CD is like food for the soul. Thank you Paul; this truly has changed my relationship with food for ever!
