Product Description

Despite the fact that most supplement makers cannot make medical claims on their packaging - and consequently can merely hint at what a remedy might be for and hope you'll be smart enough to pick up on their clues - the natural health industry is booming. Yet even if you do your homework before you shop, the chances are you're going to end up baffled and confused, because for every condition you can think of there's likely to be around 30 natural remedies that could help alleviate or even banish the symptoms. And with 30,000 supplements on sale and a further 1,000 coming onto the market every year, how do you know which to buy or what really works? How do you sift the real science from the marketing hype and make the right choice for you and your family? Now, taking a holistic approach, award-winning Sunday Times journalist Susan Clark's WHAT REALLY WORKS IN NATURAL HEALTH cuts through the confusion, the doubts and the uncertainties to offer invaluable guidance on natural health products and how best to use them to achieve optimum physical and emotional wellbeing. So if you want to use natural remedies more safely and effectively - and want to make informed, confident decisions - this is the place to start. In fact, don't step into the health store without this, the only guide you'll ever need!

3.0 out of 5 stars useful info, terrible layout, 23 Jan 2005
By A Customer
I have benefited greatly from Susan Clark's advice on health, and believe she is a conscientious journalist, keen to untangle the hype and give genuinely useful advice. Her website, unlike many similar ones, is thorough, fully accessible (without paying any fees) and concise. Therefore, it was a disappointment to read this book. The information is all there, albeit in a muddled form, and - despite the book's claim that this is the only natural health guide you'll ever need - it assumes you already have a lot of knowledge of the body and so doesn't explain causes as much as treatments.
Health books can either be reference tombs with alphabeticised ailments and their cures. Or they can be a more detailed, thorough look at the body and how to fix its problems. This book, problematically, is neither. It attempts to go through different parts of the body and address various concerns, but the information in each section is often not thorough, and tells you to jump to another page to get the second half of the information.
The first chapter is about skin, but every paragraph refers you to the second chapter, which is about the digestive system. I think the obvious first chapter would have been the colon and the digestive organs, as even she says to not sort this out first will create obstacles in trying to sort any other part of the body out. Of course her whole approach is that everything is interconnected so it's expected to have some cross-reference, but a quick look at the index at the back shows how so many entries have dozens of page numbers.
Until the updated version gets a better editor, read Dr John Briffa's "Ultimate Health" which covers the foundations of good health using natural/alternative methods.

1.0 out of 5 stars head in the clouds??, 23 Aug 2004
By A Customer
i am not quite sure where susan clarks head is but this is the worst book on natural health that i have ever read.this is a shame because many readers will buy the book looking for real information in an area filled with misinformation and bias.the writer consistently contradicts herself and presents the reader with an overwhelming number of recommendations on hundreds of products that it reads too much like a sales catalogue. Also do we really want to know the name and contact details of her personal trainer and vet?I found her references to yoga to be very badly presented to a novice reader. It was all about her and with scant regard for the reader.Totally contraditory and full of useless anecdotes.I am not sorry if this sounds strong but we really deserve better than this.I would recommend andrew weils books "8 weeks to optimum health"and "eating well for optimum health"as excellent books on this really important subject.
