Amazon.co.uk Review

Parts of Nimisha's Ship are reminiscent of the melodramatic intrigue and romance among lords and ladies in Anne McCaffrey's first SF novel Restoree (1967). Here, though, danger and drama are downplayed while the course of true love-- plus the joy of friendship--moves to centre stage. Nimisha, heir to her mother's wealth and high status, tomboyishly prefers the spaceship yards of her absentee father. She sneaks off to work with him and emerges as a gifted ship designer. One day, testing a splendid new space-yacht, she falls through a wormhole to a far-off region of the galaxy. This contains a planet of unfriendly beasties--mostly leathery- winged avians, easily shot down by Nimisha's yacht AI--and stranded wormhole victims: a haggard human party easily put right by medical treatment, and midget aliens who are easily befriended. Romance soon blooms for Nimisha, and she settles down to have the nicest human castaway's babies (twins, then triplets). Meanwhile rescue missions are on the way, one by the long slow route and one by accidental wormhole encounter. Happy family reunions follow, with a certain twinkly charm but no real suspense or surprise. It's a comforting, unthreatening read: McCaffrey addicts will love it, but newcomers may prefer to start with her tougher, grittier SF adventures like the classic Dragonflight. -- David Langford --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

While testing her Mark 5 prototype space yacht, things start to go badly wrong for Nimisha. 4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, I hope it's the start of a series!, 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
The character of Nimisha is a typical, strong, determined and slightly reckless McCaffrey heroine. Set in the world of the Coelura (Nerilka's Story/The Coelura), the book follows Nimisha's childhood as a privilaged first-families bodyheir, on inheriting her father's shipyard she follows his, and her, dream of building the most advanced spacecraft of the time and subsequently gets lost down a wormhole where she investigates strange new worlds and finds aliens, adventure and romance. The characters and the setting show great potential for futher development and I hope Anne McCaffrey writes a few follow ups.

3.0 out of 5 stars routine space age adventure / love story, 6 Aug 2000
By A Customer
An enjoyable read, but not a memorable one. The book is set in the second era of space age, after the commencement of colonisation but before first contact with alien species. It covers similar ground to Decision at Doona. The book is less interesting than other McCaffrey adventure stories set later in time, such as Generation Warriors and Sassinak, but is infinitely better than recent co-productions such as the PowerPlay series. Hard to believe it is written by the same author as the wonderful Dragons of Pern novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars One of McCaffrey weakest books. OK plot but nothing exciting, 2 April 2000
By A Customer
Having read almost everything else by Anne McCaffrey this book was a disappointment. It never managed to escape from the predictable which was a pity as it had potential. Its plot had too much in common with many of her other books and perhaps that was the problem. The characters were shallow and rarely did anything unexpected.
