Product Description

From the Publisher
The earliest legend of Pern. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover
In the beginning, before Thread, before the Dragons, before the Holds and the Weyrs and the elite Dragonriders of Pern, was just the great ships gliding through space with nearly six thousand colonists prepared to tackle the mighty task of beginning a new world on a strange planet.

It was a jewel of a planet - with rivers and seas and mountains, and breathable air and growing things. Then came the terror. The strange, unidentifiable circles in the grass suddenly revealed a meaning, and every living thing was at risk. Many died - a horrible and consuming death. All resources, every man, woman and child had to fight the terrible nightmare of Thread.

But a new creature was about to save the planet. From the delicate fire lizards a new life was born - a new symbiosis between man and beast.

DRAGONSDAWN is the magnificent account of Before the Dragons in Anne McCaffrey's world-famous chronicles of Pern. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, absorbing, spectacular!, 19 April 2003
This review is from: Dragonsdawn (Paperback)
After a years-long gap of reading Anne McCaffrey's fantastic books about the Dragons of Pern, I decided to buy my own copies of some of my favourites of the series - and what a good decision it has been so far!

Dragonsdawn has long been on my 'to read again' list and finally, as I settled comfortably and began to read it, I remembered why. The sheer scale of McCaffrey's creation really becomes apparent in this volume - in Dragonflight and the books telling of the later history of Pern, most of the action is concerned with the dragons and their riders. Not so in this. In fact, they only completely steal the limelight in the final half of the book! Fans of the dragons shouldn't be too disappointed though - having read a few of the others before this I was pleased to see where some of the place names originated from, and fascinated by the rich detail and scientific crediblity of Pern. And the build up to the dragons is very satisfying - makes it all worth the wait! :-)

In this book you get a much broader view of the beginnings of human life on Pern, how the culture was established, where certain elements found in other books originate from (examples including klah and agenothree) and - well, the detail and imagination just grabbed my attention!

The characters that emerge in the book - some prominent from the beginning, others coming into play later on - are well crafted and evoked a huge range of feelings in me, from sympathy and amusement to abject dislike. Also, although the recommended reading order places Dragonsdawn far along the list, I don't think a prior knowledge of the skills and purposes of the dragons and their riders, indeed even Pern, is essential. It paves the way for further reading, and stands alone as a classic in the series.

McCaffrey is a skilled and inspiring writer and this book is a pleasure to read, one that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of the Dragon Series with the desire to broaden the view a bit and look at how human life on Pern began.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic read, 4 Mar 2003

This review is from: Dragonsdawn (Paperback)
Anne McCaffreys Pern series manages to encompass both science fiction and fantasy and does it very well. For any fan of McCaffrey or Pern this is a 'must have' book for the collection.
With the first books of Pern the theme was more fantasy than sci-fi with the usual medieval type world, dragons etc. As the series progresses, McCaffrey brings in the sci-fi element, the fact that the Pernese are descendants of colonists from another world who, over the generations have lost their technology and reverted to a simpler way of life. All that is left are the 'gengineered' dragons.
Dragonsdawn goes back to the time when Pern was first colonised and is the story of the struggle to survive this new world. It also explains how and why the dragons of Pern were created.
I was engrossed from the first word until the last and was totally caught up in this tale of the 'beginning'. The characters are believable and not one dimensional as in many books. Their struggles to make a life on Pern and to live in harmony make a fascinating read. It isn't a lengthy book and is certainly no heavyweight of literature but it is an entertaining tale that is worthy of anyone's time. This is a book that I did not want to come to the end of.... highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing, totally engrossing book!, 15 Oct 2002
By ANNA OIKONOMAKI "Anna" (Athens, Hellas, Europe) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dragonsdawn (Paperback)
I was very reluctant to read this book, having started with the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. I came late in the series, and fell in love with the magical (somehow medieval and then again not) society of Pern, so I was understandably afraid of what the science fiction element would do to my beloved fantasy story. Well, I was never more wrong: The book gripped me and held me throughout. The characters were amazing and very real. The introduction of technology, instead of destroying my image of Pern, actually made me understand and see it better. And getting to know the heroic people whose names shape the map of the northern continent of Pern was actually touching!

I could not put the book down, I read it in the metro, while eating, even at work, and when I finished it tears were in my eyes, and let me tell you I don't often cry reading books! I woke up at night having dreamt of Pern, and I lay awake thinking of what I had read, what I would do in the place of the various heroes and how I would love to have a dragon all of my own! The story held me breathless, as I watched the settlers, a truly multicultural & multiethnic group, try to establish their utopia, only to see it destroyed by the mysterious Thread, and then gather all their courage and establish it again, more magical and richer than they even dreamed, thanks to Kiti Ping and her dragons! Amazing book, so full of hope and faith to the strength of the human spirit!

The only reason why I do not give the book five stars is the very bad editor. Many mistakes, inexcusably too many, most characteristic and annoying of which was the continuous reference to Sallah Telgar as he, or as Mr. I hope if there is a new edition, this will be corrected. Also, I missed a map of the southern continent, with the main landmarks and the original settlements presented in detail.

All in all, a very satisfying book! If you love getting lost in beautiful worlds so like and yet so unlike ours, read it! Thank you, Ms McCaffrey, for creating for us such a magical place where we can escape from the fatigue and the horrors of our world.
