5.0 out of 5 stars The Dillons present the toe-tapping Mr. Bojangles, 18 Mar 2005
By A Customer
The last we thing we learn in "Rap a Tap Tap" is that May 25, 1989 was National Tap Dance Day. I did not know that there was a National Tap Dance Day and I did not know that the day was selected because it was the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, but that does certainly not surprise me. For many Americans you say "Bojangles" and they think of the song "Mr. Bojangles," which is not about Bill Robinson even though it is about a dancer, or they remember the scene of the real Bojangles dancing on the steps with Shirley Temple in "The Littlest Colonel." Robinson made over a dozen movies, mostly musicals, in which he often played an antebellum butler opposite Temple or Will Rogers (e.g., "In Old Kentucky"). While other dancers were doing the frenetic jitterbug style, Robinson was calm, cool and collected when he tap-danced. When you watch him dance, pay attention to how his upper body is doing very little while his feet are tapping away and his face is showing the pure joy of doing what he is doing.

"Rap a Tap Tap" ("Here's Bojangles--Think of That!") is an Coretta Scott King Award winning look at "Bojangles" Robinson from the artistic team of Leo & Diane Dillon (whose work I have long appreciated, ever since I first say them illustrating the covers of paperback collections of Harlan Ellison's short stories). This is their third Coretta Scott King Award, to go along with two Caldecott Medals and lots of other honors for their illustrated books. However, this is not an illustrated biography of Robinson's life, but rather a celebration of his joy of dancing. Bojangles dances across the pages of this book, making art with his feet. Each two-page spread end with "Rap a tap tap--think of that!" No wonder teachers are talking about how their young students like having this book read aloud to them so they can all join in on the refrain.

Reading a picture book about "Bojangles" Robinson is no substitute for watching him dance, and certainly teachers can show their young students the man in action (obviously "The Littlest Colonel" scene is perfectly suited for this purpose). But the Dillons come up with a way of suggesting in their illustrations that Robinson's feet were in constant motion when he danced. This book is also oversized, which allows the Dillons to present their illustrations nice and big for everybody to see, even from the back row.
