This is the third of four Neveryona books by Delany, and by the far the best of the series. The Neveryon books were Delany's intensely complex analytical stories of seemingly "simple old-fashioned Swords & Sorcery/Fantasy". The main character is a huge, muscled ex-slave, who fights the brave fight and so on. However, in the third book, Delany was writing in 1984 in NY, while in the midst of the early days of AIDS. Information on this killer disease, from official, to medical to rampant street rumors, was scarce, contradictory and damned frightening. Delany chose to bring the two very different worlds together in this book, by writing about the Neveryon world in one chapter, and then cutting to 'present day' (at the time of his writing) NY in 1984. He also writes of a mysterious illness affecting certain citizens of Neveryon and how the society reacts to this problem. There is a lot more to "Return to Neveryona", with a long tale told by a Mummer, and a chilling account of a strange gathering of certain memorable citizens of the city present. I would recommend that those unfamiliar with Delany's Neveryon fantasies start with the first book (Flight to Neveryon), continue with the second (Neveryona) and then with this third book. However, those interested in getting straight into some of Delany's most intense and complex 'discussions' regarding AIDs, culture and politics should grab for this one first.
