One of the most overblown and excessive of all the Bond movies, this was also the last of the films to be novelised until `Licence to Kill' twelve years later. Due to its complete disassociation from the Ian Fleming novel it shares its name with, Christopher Wood's novelisation is not classic Bond but is classic film Bond. Wood fleshes out the movie's characters, whilst rendering Roger Moore's secret agent less `smirky' and altogether more akin to Fleming's original creation. He also adds a torture scene that makes the one in Casino Royale look a walk in the park! Wood develops the cold war theme that the film largely ignores and gives the monstrous `Jaws' a back story that explains how he became who he is. Chief villain Stromberg is fleshed out too and the story is far less gadget fixated and far more intriguing overall. A must-read for all Bond fans, and completists.

Although based on his screenplay, in this novel Christopher Wood has stripped away the slapstick and nudge-nudge, wink-wink humour of the film and injected a vein of sadism and gritty violence to present an entertaining Bond thriller. Although the purists may disagree, the Bond in this book is closer to Fleming's creation than the knowing raised eyebrow style of the Roger Moore interpretation: there is an edge of cruelty and a sense of vulnerability to the character. The plot follows that of the film but strips away some of the visual extravaganzas to present a more realistic read. Very entertaining and it is a shame that the book has never enjoyed a reprint.
