4.0 out of 5 stars Blood Red Game, 6 Nov 2003
This is one of the stranger books in Moorcock's repertoire. It doesn't quite fit in with any of the long running series (although it could have perhaps been shaped into the eternal champion saga). Essentially there are two main plots in this book, one directly after the other. The first charts the psychic Renark and Asquiol's quest to find why the universe is shrining. (An amusing aside is reference to Moorcock's other books through the crazed ramblings of Mary the Maze) and the second part deals with trying to save the human race from this shrinking. The namesake "The blood red game" doesn't actually feature until well into the book and in many ways the first half is the more interesting. Still for any sci-fi fan looking for something a little different or for any Moorcock fan this is a good read and is worthy of anyone's collection

3.0 out of 5 stars Early Moorcock sci-fi, 23 Aug 2005

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
The Blood Red Game is quite an early Moorcock novel, originally published in two magazine instalments in 1962. The central concept is audaciously large - concerning humanity's flight from our contracting universe by fleeing into another realm of the multiverse, along the way evolving into a higher lifeform - but crammed into a 150-page novel such a high concept ends up feeling rather rushed. Plenty of good ideas here as Moorcock develops his ideas about the multiverse, but the basic prose and characterisation (exacerbated by the 2-part magazine format forcing the book into flitting between two central characters) means this is really only one for Moorcock completists.
