An Alien Heat tells the story of the last humans at the end of time, and the romance between the decadent Jherek Carnelian and the stranded time traveller Mrs Amelia Underwood. A very light-hearted read, this novel is essentially a comedy of misunderstood manners, as the prim Mrs Underwood fails to understand decadence of far future society, and Jherek in turn finds himself in trouble with the law when he attempts to visit Amelia in 1896. A winning combination of exotic science fiction and comedy, An Alien Heat is the opening instalment in one of Moorcock's most enjoyable series, and is followed by The Hollow Lands.
