5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all TEFL-minded people, 27 Feb 2003
This book was recommended by my CELTA tutor, Paul Seligson, an author of books himself. I was quite insecure about teaching pronunciation since I am not an English native speaker but my difficulties were one by one washed away by Joanne Kenworthy's book.
It's easy to read, it's easy to understand, it's easy to apply to your own groups of students. It doesn't ask you to completely change your views on the topic - something that is very common these days with some authors...
It takes you step by step through all those difficult symbols for the phonetic alphabet and explains in detail eveything that is needed for you to start integrating pronunciation work into your already planned classes.
The book has two parts - the first goes deeply into every aspect of pronunciation (isolated sounds, linking sounds, stress, etc.) making it clear for teachers what really counts when teaching it.
The second part is a list of difficulties foreign students have while learning English. A wonderful add-in is that she categorises their common mistakes into 'high priority' and 'low priority' and suggests techniques and strategies you may use to overcome those problems.
In summary, if you haven't read it yet, you're late!
