About the Author

Jeremy Harmer has taught in Mexico and the UK where he is currently an occasional lecturer at Anglia Polytechnic University. He has trained teachers and offered seminars all over the world. A writer of both course material and methodology, he is the author of methodology titles including How to Teach English (1998), The Practice of English Language Teaching (3rd edition 2001) and How to teach Writing (2004) ­ all published by Pearson Education Ltd. He is the General Editor of the Longman methodology list and hosts a teacher development website at http://www.eltforum.com/

Alongside a guide to grammar and usage, this should cover the vast majority of the material of a TESOL course. As well as containing overviews of teaching approaches and discussion of current issues, the book is a practical guide to a balanced activities approach to teaching with an emphasis on the communicative approach. I came across this book as a required text on an intensive TESOL course. Reading half the book before the course gave me a real head start.

This is easily the best all-round A-Z of how to teach English as a Foreign Language. Already a classic before this edition, the new version is thoroughly up-to-date and more rational in its organisation. A real boon to teachers, trainers and other ELT professionals.

I read this book in its entirety before completing a TEFL course and found it invaluable. It covers everything from intonation through to the use of audio-visual equipment in class.

Whilst I did find some of the information plain common sense it is still a 'must read' to get a foot up in the world of TEFL/TESOL
